OBJECTIVE

This survey is also a very useful marketing tool e.g. we would like to publish some of the results of the students in our school magazine and also in local papers. People get a better idea of social background of our students and of their free time.

STRATEGY

We wanted to know way of life of young people studying at our school. For this topic we prepared questions in a questionaire. The questions were divided into two main parts. One part included questions concerned with the social background and family atmosphere which our students live in. The second part was focused on questions about their free time.

FINALLY AND FOR STATISTIC´S SAKE

We got 100 forms back from 100 students. From marketing point of view a response of 100 % is a success. The students were more or less obliged to co-operate because we distributed the survey papers during English language lessons . To be honest: we had hoped that all involved schools in the project would have responded . We could compare the social background and free time of young people in different countries which could be a very interesting and valuable output .

I decided to write about the life of my grandfather. He is not alive now, but his story from World War II is one of the most mentioned stories of our family. I heard it from my mother. This is my grandfather story:

”This story is very long, so I will start, when German armies repulsed our armies to wood: In the wood there were a lot of soldiers, partisans and also injured people. I was hitted by shrapnels to the right leg. After time we’ve come to Vrutky, a small Slovak town, where we were transported to Ruzomerok and Biely Potok by cargo truck. There were two officers and 36 soldiers in the crew. First truck was under command of active first lieutenant and I was the commander of the second truck. 600 metres from our guards were road barriers. When the first truck passed around the third, we heard a shout : „Stop! Hands up!“. There were German guards and Slovak guardsmen in dugouts near the road, together. Then the shoot-out began. The gun battle began. The crew of the first truck have surrended but our squad have flung down to dike. We tried to get into the forest with the help of natural barriers. They have murdered all of the soldiers except two men... It was a lance-corporal and I. We were injured either. We have reached Biely Potok under the hard conditions. In consequence we have joint colonel's Cerny unit.”

In our country we have also some famous Romany peoples. For example there was Superstar show (like American idols) on TV. Among young singers in the top 11 there was one Romany singer. His name is Peter Koncek and he became very popular.

We have got also a very popular music band which is called Kmeto Band. They are father and son with other members of their family and they popularize typical Gypsies songs and music.

These dancers are members of Romathan - professional Gypsy theatre from Kosice. We are proud that it is maybe the only one in Europe. It was founded by Romany civil right activists shortly after the end of communist rule in 1992. This 60 member ensemble the ROMATHAN still has its artistic independence.

"We don't just want to entertain but like to educate our people" says one of the elder actors and co-founder of the ROMATHAN. With these words he describes the everlasting attempt of the arts‚ independent of ethnic roots: to influence daily life and to give power to shape one's own destiny.
