- At first we decided to write about Romany minority, because there are big problems with living together with them.
- We looked for good and bad examples of these people (in the past they were called Gypsies)
- We took some photos from building sites habited by Gypsies
- Then we looked for photos of famous actors and singers of this minority
On May 1st 2004 Slovakia became the part of European Union. Every country of this union has its own problems with immigration of people from the abroad, e.g. from Africa, Asia or South America. But Slovakia has its traditional problem. It was a problem during socialism era and it remains as a problem for today. This is not only social but also political problem.
There are two types of Romany people: Some of them are clever and they have no problem to integrate to normal life. But most of Romanies are problematic, because they need some help from the government. The government gives quite much money to them, but they don’t know how to use this money. After they get money they buy non important things like satellite, mobile phones, new television sets or alcohol drinks. Young Gypsies do not go to school regularly and instead of it they smoke, drink alcohol and use drugs. These problems with this population are still grooving up. They live in ghettos in towns and many of them live in villages in very poor conditions. All those places are unbelievably dirty and full of garbage but nobody tides it up. They also become parents in young age and they have their children when they are 16 – 17.
Here are photos taken at one suburb in our town Košice:
We are students of Secondary electrotechnical school in Kosice. The school was founded in 1967. The study lasts for 4 years and is finished with the School living examination. The study at our school provides more academic education. We have many attractive activities as you can read in the following paragraphs.
The talented students can show other students their skills and abilities, or hobies in the TALENTARIUM. They sing, play on the musical instruments. They can show object which they collect. The students amuse themselves and have a good time.
In the begginig of the new school year we have welcome party for new students which is called IMATRIKULACIA. It is ceremony in which new students swear loyalty to school and school rules. Because in our school we have mostly boys we usually invite girls from other schools.
In the end of study on our school is Gratuated´s party which is called STUZKOVA. In this party class teacher gives to students green ribbon as a symbol of hope. And succesful finishing the study. It is connected with party and performance of students.
Typical tradicion for our school is also school trip in each school year. It takes place usally in May or June before the end of school year. The trip is connected with seeing new places and visiting factories to see and know new tochologies. It is funny for all students because they can know each other better. Also we have sports competitions in football, voleyball and basketball.
Becase we are special technical school our students can take part in competition in special technical subjects which is called Stredoskolska odborna cinnost (SECONDARY SPECIAL ACTIVITIES).
We have more activities which you can know when you come and visit our school but in our opinion – as we are the students of fourth year, these are the most atractive ones.
I think my best scool time was during my stay in Netherlands where I and my schoolmates spent three weeks. Our stay started on March 13th and it lasted until April 3rd 2003.
Our journey started at the airport in Kosice. From here we flew to Prague and we had to wait for our next plane four hours. When we arrived in Amsterdam we were charmed by that huge airport. Then we had to travel by train to the city where our Holland school partners waited for us. The city of our stay is called Stadskanaal.
It was late evening when we came to the camp . We were so tired that we went to bed immediately. The camp was a sport centre with reception, swimming pool and tennis courts. Our friends came for us and we joined them for visiting their school and then we were officially welcomed by some local authorities. The same day we had also some lessons of Dutch language. The next day was free for us so we went to the city and went for sightseeing.
Everyday instead of weekends we had to travel to Groningen where we worked in the University of Groningen. Every Saturday we had a trip to some factory or a historical or cultural place. We enjoyed the North Sea near the German borders. The same day we went to Germany to visit a big ship factory.
We were amazed by Amsterdam, by historical places like the old fortress, by old villages and of course by Dutch people who were very kind. It was nice to spend some time abroad in a quite different country. Me and my 8 schoolmates are often talking about that great time and we will never forget it.
